The bond of sisterhood is one of the most intimate yet complicated familial bonds next to the bond of a mother with her child. In Her Shoes (2005)
In Her Shoes (2005) stars Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette as a pair of total opposite sisters who are dealing with their own personal issues.
Cameron Diaz plays careless party girl Maggie who’s irresponsibility and impulsiveness ruins the life of her older, more put together sister’s life. They go on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement after they learn that their maternal grandmother is still alive.
The film is an excellent watch for older sisters struggling to understand their much different younger sisters.
Frozen (2013)
Do we even have to explain why we included this one?
Disney’s Frozen (2013) strays from the usual love story to move the plot to focus on the relationship between two sisters Elsa and Anna ending up with an emotional story and a relatable set of characters.
The film is also best remembered for its earworm songs like Let it Go and Do You Want to Build a Snowman. But more importantly, it was one of the films which paved the way for other Disney animated films which don’t feature the usual love story that kids usually see.
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005)
While the characters in the film aren’t really biological sisters they are sisters by heart. Based on a young adult novel of the same name, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005), tells the story of the titular sisterhood composed of four teenage girls who have to spend the summer away from each other for the first time.
Before they each leave, they find a ‘magical’ pair of regular blue jeans which strangely fits all of them perfectly despite their different body types.
The Parent Trap (1998)
Once upon a time, Lindsay Lohan was a talented 12-year-old actress who was cast to play a set of twins in the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap.
Here she plays both Hallie and Annie a pair of twins who meet each other in a summer camp after being separated as children after the divorce of their parents. Each wanting to meet the other parent, they devise a plan to switch places so that they can finally get to know their mother and father they never met.
Sisters (2015)
Highly talented comedians Amy Poehler and Tina Fey join forces to play, well, sisters in the film Sisters (2015).
After learning that their parents are planning to sell their childhood home. The two decide to throw one last house party reminiscent of the ones they used to hold when they were in high school. Inviting their former classmates, they set out to finally let Poehler’s goody two shoes character get to experience a legitimate house party as Fey’s wild child character assumes the role of the sober house mother.
Sunshine Cleaning (2008)
Sunshine Cleaning (2008) is about a pair of underachieving sisters who themselves at a low point in their lives despite a seemingly bright future when they were younger.
Amy Adams and Emily Blunt play the lead roles of the Norkowski sisters who team up to build a business which offers crime scene clean up services.
The film received mostly positive reviews upon its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
My Sister’s Keeper (2009)
Based on Jodi Picoult’s novel of the same name, My Sister’s Keeper (2009) is about Anna, a girl who was conceived to be a savior sister to her older sister who is suffering from acute leukemia.
As she grows older, she learns of the consequences of her being an exact match to her sister. As her sister goes into renal failure, she is torn between donating one of her kidneys to save her or being able to live the kind of normal life she wants to live.
Practical Magic (1998)
Now, for something lighter, here is Practical Magic (1998) a film about a pair of witch sisters reunited when one of their lives is threatened.
Here, Nicole Kidman plays a troubled witch who accidentally killed her abusive lover while he attempted to kill her. Together with her sister, played by Sandra Bullock, they hatch a plan to bury the body in the backyard of their house.
Don’t be fooled by this dark premise though. The film makes for a great romcom and family drama film about the importance of family.
Little Women (1994)
Based on a novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women (1994) follows the story of the four March sisters during and after the time of the American Civil War. wanting different things out of life, we see the sisters grow up and pursue various paths in life.
The sisters are played by some of the most talented 90s actresses Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Trini Alvarado, and Claire Danes. The film remains to be a 90s favorite and is set to have a remake to be directed by Greta Gerwig.
Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
As you may have guessed from the title of this Woody Allen film, it’s a story is about, well, Hannah and her sisters.
Told in three-story acts which end in a Thanksgiving celebration, the film centers on an ensemble cast of characters in a complicated plot filled with cheating and betrayal.
The film stars some of the biggest names of the time including Allen’s then-wife, Mia Farrow, Dianne West, Carrie Fisher, and Barbara Hershey.
